The 44-year-old owner of a store on a busy Southside street was stabbed to death this morning, police said.

Police believe motorists who passed the Mexican Supermarket, 3535 S. East St., may be able to provide information in the woman's slaying.

"I am hoping somebody paid attention this morning," Det. Marlene Neitzel said.

Police say the attack occurred between 8 a.m., when the store opened, and 9:30 a.m.

A customer at the Mexican market found the body of Alejandra Martinez in a bathroom, police said. She owned the store with her husband, Rodolfo Martinez. They have three children.

"We don't know what happened here … it was somebody who was upset," said stepdaughter Minerva Martinez. "This is tough on our family."

The Martinez family has lived in Indianapolis for 30 years and were among the early Mexican business owners in the city.

Investigators have not determined if anything was taken from the store.

Robbery detectives said there have been several holdups at Hispanic businesses on the Westside, but this crime may not be part of that pattern.

There were no prior reports of trouble at the store.
