05/05/05

Fifth day of the Fifth month of the Year Five of the Second Millenium.

Cinco de Mayo.

Six years and one day since Phil Wingert died.

A excise cop, a fire marshal, a robbery detective, and a park ranger and his drug dog walk into a bar . . .

Not a joke, but, of course, this same situation took place last Saturday night at Sidewinders on Indy's Southside. This is a bar about 20 blocks north of our place. I always thought that the bar would probably do its best to live up to its name, Sidewinders. No mention of meth or oxy.

On 4/30/05, shortly before midnight, South District officers, an Indiana Excise officer, an IFD Deputy Fire
Marshal, an IPD Robbery detective, and a Park Ranger and his drug dog, conducted a pro-active law
enforcement effort at Sidewinders bar, 1847 S. State Av. This resulted in a total of eleven arrests for various
charges including dealing and possession of cocaine, extreme intoxication, and auto theft. Additionally, six
people received citations for possession of false identification and minors in a tavern. The owner received
citations for a variety of liquor law violations. There were more than 225 people in the building, which has a
rated capacity of 125. Other dangerous violations were noted by the Deputy Fire Marshal, such as only one
working entrance/exit (all the other doors were padlocked). After the bar was emptied, officers discovered
approximately 25 bindles of powder cocaine scattered throughout the bar. It should be noted that the bar’s
license is up for renewal.

Turn on The Night!

On Wednesday, in conjunction with the U. S. A spotlight will be set up at Pleasant Run and St. Paul, where representatives from the U. S. Attorney's Office, the City of Indianapolis, neighborhood organizations, the ministry, and IPD South District will gather. Everyone is invited to take part. Susan Brooks, the U. S. Attorney for the Southern District will be present.
I have attached a flyer regarding this ceremony.

Teen-Age Tall Tales

"Case number 040055970 - Armed robbery - On 5/22/04 at approximately 11pm, the two juvenile victims were riding their bikes in the 1200 block of S. Shelby. A white Astro mini-van containing about 12 h/m's pulled up next to them. Three h/m's, all armed with knives, jumped from the van and surrounded the victims. One victim fled while the other was knocked from his bike. The suspects took the bike and fled in the van. An older, red, 4-door vehicle with the rear window missing was following the suspects' van."

12 men . . . and a bicyle in an Astro mini-van?

This is funny, kinda:

Case number 040053183 - Armed robbery - On 5/15/04, at approximately 7am, a b/m entered the Spin Cycle Laundry, 620 Twin Aire, with a jacket wrapped around his hand. He confronted an employee and implied that he had a gun under the jacket. He demanded money. She told him that she only had about $14 in quarters. She gave him the quarters and he demanded her personal money. She gave him money from her purse and then he told her to get undressed. She refused and he threatened her, stating "things will get rough". She stated, "I guess things will get rough" as she pulled out a .25 caliber handgun from her purse and pointed it at the suspect. The suspect quickly fled from the business. The victim did have a permit to carry the handgun.

Attention, Crime Watch:

Indianapolis Police Dept. South District
Case number 040018481 - Sexual assault - On 1/30/04, at approximately 6am, the suspect entered a door that had been accidentally left unlocked at a residence in the 500 block of Edwards. He sexually assaulted the female victim and burglarized the house.

It would be nice to feel it would be safe to leave our doors unlocked, but it cannot be stressed enough, UNLOCKED DOORS MEAN EASY ACCESS. Earlier in January almost a dozen burglaries took place in the Garfield Park neighborhood. All of the burglaries occured because a door was left unlocked.

Burglaries in Garfield Park.

Not far from home, there have been break-ins recently. The main way these burglaries have happened was that either the front door or back door was unlocked. Residents were even home at the time of the theft.

Read on.

From 12/30/03 through 1/3/04, eleven burglaries were reported in an area
from East Street to Shelby and from Southern to Troy.

Four offenses were garage burglaries, and six were house burglaries.

Three of the house burglaries occurred when the resident was home. Entry was made through unlocked doors. One occurred during day shift, five during middle
shift, and three during late shift.

The time on the other two is unknown. Items takes were small enough to be concealed and carried, so the suspects could be on foot. It appears that more than one person is
involved.

Please pay attention to any suspicious persons who seem to be
loitering in this area and report them to the police dispatcher.

On Tuesday, August 5, 2003, neighborhoods throughout Marion County will
participate in the 20th Annual National Night Out. National Night Out is
designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate
support for and participation in local anti-crime efforts, strengthen
neighborhood spirit, and send a message to criminals that neighborhoods
are organized and can fight back.
Neighbors can participate by hosting a block party, cookout, pitch-in,
ice cream social, flashlight walk, neighborhood parade, pizza party,
dessert party, youth activities, or anything that brings you and your
neighbors together outside.
Don't miss this great opportunity to show your support for law
enforcement and crime-free neighborhoods, strengthen police-community
partnerships, and celebrate neighborhood unity.
I have attached a registration form so that your neighborhood or block
club can register for this event. We will attempt to have officers
present at as many locations as possible.

On May 18th, at approximately 11:50pm, a neighbor near the Garfield Park
Church of Good, 401 E. Southern, heard glass breaking. He called the
police, and when the first officer arrived, he observed one person
climbing through a broken window, while a second person stood by the
window. They spotted the officer and began to flee. Officers set up a
perimeter and a K-9 officer was called to the scene. The suspects were
hiding in some bushes and failed to show themselves after repeatedly
being ordered to do so. The K-9 officer and his dog made apprehension.
It was discovered that these two suspects were brothers, one being 42
years old and the other being 43 years old. Both are on parole out of
Vigo County for murder. They are currently being held without bond.
These individuals are being considered as possible suspects in the
other church burglaries that I reported last week. The detective on the
case is attempting to gather evidence that would link the suspects to
these other burglaries. However, I would still urge that precautions be
taken. Money should not be left in the office unless in a secured safe.

In the last week, there have been five (5) burglaries at churches on the
South Side. The suspects make forced entry into the churches at night,
go to the offices, and ransack them. Money and other small items are
taken. Please pass this information on to your own churches. Money and
other valuable items need to securely hidden or removed from the
premises at night time.

Churches in University Heights, Beech Grove and our immediate southside area have been hit.
